"Around MWC, we saw a number of 5G smartphones unveil. The first wave of 5G smartphones are finally going to be sold later this week in South Korea from Samsung and LG. Both the devices will cost north of US$1,000. This is because the cost deltas for adding 5G connectivity and IP royalties between 4G to 5G phones are estimated to be in the range of US$80-US$120. Added to this are marketing costs. Depending upon the regions (testing, certifications, duties) and variants (mmWave or sub-6GHz or both), we will see such cost deltas appearing in the first wave of devices. Further, with subsidies almost non-existent in 5G versus 4G era, it remains to be seen how is the uptake for these new devices initially. Marketing push and attractive 5G data plans pricing from carriers will be key for 5G smartphones to reach tens of millions of shipments this year." – Neil Shah
