"MediaTek has developed an SoC compatible with the 5G network, which relies on the Helio M70 5G modem, a mid-range rival of the Qualcomm X50 modem. The modem delivers download speed of up to 4.7 Gbps and a throughput of 2.5 Gbps. The SoC will have an ARM Cortex-A77 CPU and a Mali-G77 ARM GPU, all on 7nm architecture. The mass production will begin in the second quarter of 2020. This processor will be first manufactured in 7nm FinFET at TSMC’s facilities. All signs point to sales of mid- and low-priced 5G phones beginning in China in 2020. There is an expectation that subsidy will be paid for 5G market activation in China. MediaTek's 5G compatible mid-priced SoC is adding fuel to this expectation. According to gizChina, OPPO and Vivo will be the main customers of this new SoC. However, MediaTek's new SoCs may be in a short supply situation since the SoCs will be produced through TSMC's 7nm process. And already there is a very high production demand for this process." – Jene Park
