Overview:
In Q4 2022, the global smartphone market fell 19% compared to the same period last year but remained flat QoQ at 302.64 million units. Apple surpassed Samsung to take the top spot in quarterly growth, which helped global smartphone shipments reach 300 million units, a level it failed to reach last quarter because of poor business confidence caused by political and economic uncertainty. China's smartphone market is experiencing low demand. Due to the sluggish economic conditions caused by COVID-19 lockdowns, shipments fell 16% YoY during the quarter. Shipments, on the other hand, increased by 2% QoQ. Apple was the only major OEM to experience QoQ growth during the quarter, owing to strong demand for the iPhone 14 series, while other major OEMs experienced QoQ declines. In Q4 2022, India accounted for 21% of total smartphone shipments in the region, totaling 31.4 million units. Smartphone shipments in India fell 30% YoY and 31% QoQ due to weak consumer demand caused by a higher inflation macroeconomic condition. LATAM’s smartphone shipments declined 14% YoY but grew 6% QoQ in Q4 2022 to reach 29.9 million units. Consumer demand remains weak in the region due to the rising inflation and weak currency. Brazil led the region with 10.6 million shipments in Q4 2022, despite a 13% YoY decline. Apple and OPPO were the only top-five smartphone brand to register a QoQ growth, with shipments increasing 42% and 4% QoQ respectively in Q4 2022. The brands market share increased significantly in Q4 2022. In Q4 2022, Samsung's global smartphone shipments fell 16% YoY and 9% QoQ to 58.3 million units.
