"ODECU (Chilean Consumer Rights Organization) is suing Apple for slowing down the older version of iPhones. The filing includes the iPhone 7 and older models, including the iPhone 5C. The federal court accepted the filing on January 25, 2019. By February 5, 2019, the ODECU had already 130,000 iPhone owners who filled the form adhering to public demand. The lawsuit requires Apple to compensate for CLP 126,000/US$190 per user.
Chile has Apple’s third largest user base in the LATAM region. There are more than 2.5 million iPhone 7 and older iPhones currently in use in Chile. If the lawsuit succeeds, it could cost Apple millions of dollars and set a precedent for other LATAM markets to pursue the same kind of litigation. If the lawsuit fails, it will affect Apple’s brand and force Apple to spend resources to fix this issue." – Tina Lu
