March handset sell through rose compared to February as the actual work days increased and Sales in Japan rose sharply as Softbank ignites a promotion competition during the local peak season. Sell in drops slightly improving the inventory level again.
Smartphones are now 68% of the market. Android share was 81% of the smartphone market, while iOS share fell to 14%.
Samsung sales are still strong compared to other brands, especially in China. Sales of Note 3 exceed that of Galaxy S4 as the market is gearing up for the new Galaxy S5 that was already sold in Korea during March. Apple volumes drop sharply as the heavy iPhone 5C inventory is depleted. This gives opportunity to other brands in the market like LG, Sony, HTC which have flagship products in the $400 price line. Xiaomi is almost selling as much as Sony now.
The share of sales in the $400 price band falls as iPhone sales drop but the $300 price range grows and the mid tier also grows as the ultra cheap Chinese smartphones that flooded the market cease temporarily now that the peak season is over. This month 56%of Global Android devices are sold under $200 globally.
